Cranes are an essential component of many production and assembly halls, through which loads can be transported overhead in a three-dimensional working area. In addition, cranes can also be found at ports, mines and railroad stations around the world.

The crane and hoist industry includes manufacturers of cranes for various applications (e.g. industrial and process cranes) and designs (e.g. bridge crane, gantry crane) as well as for their suppliers (e.g. for trolleys, winches, hooks, control electronics etc.) and service providers.

Although there are a few very large, global suppliers, small to medium-sized companies and suppliers with a regional focus are still highly visible throughout the industry. These companies have been facing increasingly fierce competition from the far east and increased pressure to consolidate in order to position themselves strategically and effectively, is expected in the future. Many of the companies lack, above all, a coherent internationalization strategy
